The Feynman Technique Is Great (Until You Stop Doing It)

A method that fits on an index card

The Feynman technique fits on an index card, which is part of why it spread so far through study videos and productivity blogs. You take one idea you believe you understand, write its name at the top of a blank page, and explain the whole thing in plain language as though the reader has never heard of the subject. Wherever the explanation goes vague, or leans on a term you cannot actually define, you have found a seam in your own understanding, so you go back to the source, patch that spot, and say it again more simply. That is the whole method, named after the physicist Richard Feynman, whose reputation for plain explanation the technique borrows. The four-step version circulating today was assembled and popularized mostly by other people, after his lifetime.

My position, before any of the mechanics: the Feynman technique works as well as any study method I have read about, and almost nobody keeps running it past a few weeks. That gap between how good it is and how briefly people use it is the part worth writing about, and it has very little to do with the technique itself. The explaining is sound, and the scheduling around it is what falls over.

What explaining out loud does that rereading cannot

Two things happen when you explain an idea from memory, and both of them are well studied. The first is retrieval, which means you are pulling the idea out of your own head instead of letting your eyes travel across somebody else's sentences, and the pulling is what strengthens the memory. Psychologists call this the testing effect, and it is one of the most reliably reproduced findings in the whole study of memory.

The second thing is gap exposure, which is where the plain-language rule earns its keep. Rereading a chapter feels productive because the author's phrasing sits right there doing the work for you, and familiarity with a page gets mistaken for command of the material more often than anyone likes to admit. Strip the source away and force yourself into ordinary words, and the soft spots start announcing themselves within three sentences. Robert Bjork's research on desirable difficulties describes this exact trade, where the study method that feels harder in the moment is the one that leaves more behind afterward.

There is a limit here, and it is the one the four-step diagrams leave out. A single good explanation resets your memory of an idea once, and the forgetting curve that Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped in the 1880s starts pulling it back down the moment you close the notebook. Durability comes from returning to the same idea across days, so each pass arrives right as the memory begins to fade, which is the spacing effect doing the actual work. One brilliant Sunday-afternoon explanation of a concept you never revisit is a pleasant afternoon with almost nothing to show for it by Thursday.

My friend Sam runs this method six times a day without calling it anything

My friend Sam repairs appliances, mostly dryers and dishwashers in houses spread across three counties, and he has ADHD, which he says rules out roughly every study method anybody has ever recommended to him. Every job ends the same way, in somebody's laundry room with the panel still off. He stands there explaining in the plainest words available what broke, why it broke, and what he had to do about it. His line about thermal fuses is that the fuse is a fire alarm which does not reset, and he keeps a photo on his phone of a scorched one he pulled out of a customer's dryer years ago, because people believe the picture faster than they believe the sentence.

That is the Feynman technique, six or seven times a day, with a customer for the blank page. Sam's knowledge of dryers is the most durable body of knowledge I have watched anybody build, and none of it arrived through a notebook ruled into four labeled boxes. He knows he understands a fault when the explanation comes out clean, and he knows he is guessing the second he hears himself reaching for jargon in front of somebody's washer.

Last year he bought a study guide for a commercial refrigeration certification and decided to run the same method deliberately, at his kitchen table, in the evenings after work. It lasted about a week, which is what happened the two times I tried the four-box version on a stack of saved articles. On the job, the work hands him all three of the pieces that make the method run: the prompt, the audience, and a deadline standing in front of him with her car keys already in her hand. At the kitchen table you supply all three yourself, every evening, indefinitely. The day has already taken whatever it takes out of you by then.

I notice this every time the technique goes around online again. Nearly every version of it shows the same photograph of a notebook page divided into four tidy quadrants, and I have never once met a person who filled that page a second time. The layout itself is perfectly fine, and nothing inside it decides what you explain tomorrow, or reminds you that the idea you explained on Tuesday is due for another pass on Friday. Blurting dies of the same thing, and so does every hand-run review system I have watched a friend abandon after one strong month.

The retrieval part of any of these methods takes two minutes, and the administration around it takes twenty, which is the honest reason people stop. Discipline was never really the variable being tested here, whatever the productivity blogs suggest.

The version of this you can run before dinner tonight

Keep the explaining and hand off the calendar. Pick one thing you took in today, an article, a podcast episode, a video essay, whatever is still fresh in your head, and close it before you begin. Then explain it out loud in plain words, to a person if one is nearby and to your steering wheel if not. Pay attention to the sentence where you stall, because that stall is the gap worth going back for. Then bring the same idea around again tomorrow, and once more a few days after that, so each explanation lands just before the thing would have slipped away from you.

Removing that overhead is most of the reason brainretain exists in the first place. The division of labor is the point, because something else tracks what is due and when, and the part left to you is the part that builds the memory, which is answering from your own head.

None of this makes the recall itself comfortable, and it is not supposed to. That stumble you feel halfway through explaining something in ordinary words is the desirable difficulty in action, and the discomfort is what a memory getting stronger actually feels like. What goes away is the filing, the scheduling, and the nightly decision about which of the forty things you learned this month deserves another look.

The explaining was never the hard part

What the Feynman technique gets right is that understanding shows up in your ability to say a thing simply, and that the moment your words go mushy you have located the work. What it never gives you is an answer to the question of what you explain tomorrow, or the week after, once the initial enthusiasm has burned off. That missing piece is administrative, which sounds unglamorous next to a physicist's name. It is also why a excellent method has such a short average lifespan in most people's weeks.

So here is the test worth running tonight, and it takes under a minute of your time. Take something you read or watched last month, and before you look anything up, explain it out loud to whoever is in the room as though they have never heard of it. If you stall inside of two sentences, the method was working fine all along, and what you were missing was anything that brought the idea back around to you.
